How do I calculate position size on a perp?
Risk in dollars divided by the distance to your stop. Risking $500 with a stop $2,000 below a $100,000 entry gives 0.25 units, a $25,000 position. On a $50K account that's 0.5x leverage.
Five quick tools for perps traders, built for prop accounts: size a trade from your risk, see how much room your drawdown gives you, and check PnL, funding and liquidation.
How big to go so your stop costs exactly the risk you picked.
Fees and slippage not included. Check the leverage against the firm's max for that market.
How far price can move against a position before you hit the daily loss limit or the max drawdown.
Assumes you start the day at the account size with no other open trades. Firms measure limits differently, see the rules guide.
Profit or loss on a perp trade, after trading fees.
0.045% is Hyperliquid's base taker fee. Prop firms set their own commissions. Funding not included.
What funding costs or pays you while you hold a perp, at a steady rate.
A positive rate means longs pay shorts. Real rates change every hour. 0.00125% an hour is Hyperliquid's base interest rate.
Where an isolated position gets liquidated on an exchange like Hyperliquid.
Uses Hyperliquid's formula: maintenance margin is half the initial margin at max leverage. Ignores fees, funding and margin tiers. On a prop firm account you hit the drawdown limit long before this.
Risk in dollars divided by the distance to your stop. Risking $500 with a stop $2,000 below a $100,000 entry gives 0.25 units, a $25,000 position. On a $50K account that's 0.5x leverage.
Position value divided by your account or margin. A $250,000 position on a $50K account is 5x. Prop firms cap leverage per market, so check the firm's limit before you size.
Daily loss limit in dollars divided by your position value. A 3% limit on $50K is $1,500. With a $250,000 position, a 0.6% move against you hits it. Most perps prop firms count open PnL toward the limit.
Side times exit minus entry times size, with side 1 for long and -1 for short. Long 0.5 BTC from $100,000 to $101,000 is $500 gross. At 0.045% per side, fees are about $45, so you net about $455.
Position value times the funding rate for each interval. Hyperliquid charges it every hour and uses the oracle price to value the position. At 0.00125% an hour, a $100,000 position pays $1.25 an hour, $30 a day.
On Hyperliquid you're liquidated when account equity drops below maintenance margin, which is half the initial margin at the market's max leverage. Long 1 BTC at $100,000 with 10x isolated on a 40x market gets liquidated around $91,139.
